This being one of the greatest cities in the world (no shade, Topeka), there are numerous things for you to do over Memorial Day Weekend. Plus, if you’re a shopper, you can also stay in the A/C and take advantage of great Memorial Day Deals. Read on to set your course for Memorial Day, New York.
Patriotic Classics (Parades)
Kings County Memorial Day Parade: This year marks the 150th anniversary of the biggest Memorial Day parade in NYC. The parade begins at 11am, starting at 78th and Third and ending at John Paul Jones Park on 101st. At the end of the route, there is a memorial service for all who wish to participate in honoring those our country has lost throughout our countless wars.
Little Neck, Queens: Also having a major anniversary (its 90th!), the Memorial Day Parade in Little Neck, Queens is reputedly the largest, not just in the city, but the nation. If you don’t mind the crowds, definitely check this one out. This year, after the parade, The Blue Aces, an Air Force band, will be performing classics and current hits.
Kids Party Cruise: If you are one of those people who enjoys family friendly events or even has a few kids of your own, then spend part of your Memorial Day Weekend at this Kids Party Cruise.
Your kids will absolutely love floating out of the Skyport Marina with “patriotic” Iron Man and you’ll love that they will be entertained for a couple of hours.
For those of you who are blissfully child-free, there are other party options available. If you’re looking for some daytime fun, head to the Angel of Harlem for Brunch, Booze, and Beats. “The Turn up begins at 12pm” and is hosted by The Alumni Group, who traditionally coordinate events for people who attended HBCU’s, but the party is free and open to all. Get there early, as there are no reservations and this bangin’ bash operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
It wouldn’t be Memorial Day Weekend, if there wasn’t a white party happening somewhere. Rest assured, you can attend one right here in NYC. Heaven on a Rooftop will be at Hudson Terrace and is especially friendly to the ladies and anyone with a birthday: no cover! Sorry, fellas: your best shot is to get there before 6pm; otherwise you will be ponying up at the door. Your other incentive to get there early is the two-for-one Margaritas and Mimosas before 6pm. This party kicks off on Saturday, so you’ll be perfectly sober for Memorial Day in New York.
If you want to do more of your Memorial Day Weekend partying with one of those serving our country, you’re in luck: Fleet Week begins on May 24th and doesn’t end until May 30th. Check out the Fleet Week Music Festival. Flagship Brewery in Staten Island shuts down the block for this event, which features local bands and the U.S. Navy Band’s Rhode Island Sound. Food and brews abound at this festive event.
There is no better way to celebrate Memorial Day in New York than going to The Intrepid Museum, docked at Pier 86. Every year, sailors inevitably flock to this monument to take part in a slew of events. The best of which is probably the annual screening of Top Gun. Bring a chair and expect a lot of hooting and hollering. After the movie, treat one of our fine men and women to a drink at a nearby bar.

If you want to play it safe, you can always count on Macy’s having great bargains this time of year. The best part about visiting their flagship store (besides the variety and sheer size of the place) is riding the original wooden escalators. Make sure you take those for a spin as your combing the floors for insanely reduced merchandise.
If you like department stores, but want to keep it more local, head to Bloomingdales. Like Macy’s, they always have great Memorial Day Weekend deals. On top of that, if you are a Loyalist cardholder, you will always get increased discounts and points for everything you buy.
